Canadians may face delays in getting their holiday gifts and purchases this year after workers at the national postal service went on strike.

Around 55,000 postal workers went on a strike Friday at 12:01 a.m. ET, according to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). The union says a strike came as a last resort following a year of bargaining with little progress.

Canada Post workers are on strike after failing to reach a negotiated agreement with their employer. Canadian Union of Postal Workers says approximately 55-thousand workers are striking, claiming little progress has been made in the bargaining process.
