Just weeks after Gov. Ron DeSantis first used the term in a state document, legislation designating the Gulf of America advance in the Legislature.

Florida lawmakers took the first steps Tuesday to wipe away the Gulf of Mexico from state laws and educational materials.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The so-called “Gulf of America” bill cleared a hurdle in the Florida Legislature on Tuesday. SB 1058 moved forward with a six to one vote in the Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee.

Three Republican-controlled House and Senate panels gave initial approval to bills aimed at moving to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
